Where to beging learning about Tactical Media?

The foundational texts in Tactical Media Theory are among others :

Garcia, D. and G. Lovink, The ABC of Tactical Media, Nettime, (Access May 16, 2014)

The concept of Tactical Media has been influenced by the work of Michel Certeau. A tactic Certeau argues, “insinuates itself into the other’s place, fragmentarily, without taking it over”. A tactic is anti-thesis to a strategy. For more on Michel Certeau read:

Certeau, M. The Practice of Everyday Life, University of California Press, Berkley, 1984. (Access May 16, 2014)

The legacy of the Situationist is another influence on Tactical Media theory.

Other works on Tactical Media are:

Riley, R. Tactical Media, Minneapolis : University of Minnesota Press, 2009.

Tactical media describes interventionist media art practices that engage and critique the dominant political and economic order. Rather than taking to the streets and staging spectacular protests, the practitioners of tactical media engage in an aesthetic politics of disruption, intervention, and education.

The work of Claire Bishop on Viewers as Producers is important for understanding Tactical Media. Remixing and re-purposing certain artifacts (logo, advertisement, etc.) for instance can be understood as tactical media.

Kluitenberg, E. The Legacies of Tactical Media,  Network Notebooks 05, Institute of Network Cultures, Amsterdam, 2011.

According to Eric Kluitenberg, Tactical Media employ the ‘tactics of the weak’ to operate on the terrain of strategic power by means of ‘any media necessary’.

Alessandra Renzi argues that: Tactical Media (TM) are a loosely defined set of practices that can be used by activists and community groups seeking to engage with the production of counter-information, as well as with its modes and possibilities of dissemination. In fact, the tactical circulation of information is a fundamental aspect of political intervention in the informational environment.

In 30 Years of Tactical Media, Felix Stalder discusses the increasing reliance of Tactical Media on commercial infrastructure which he argues is introducing new points of failure as the policing of the commercial platforms is getting more intense.

Additionally, here is the trace of an excellent online course put together by Brian Holmes and the autonomous university.
